Surgery: Surgery is widely used for treating the patients with non-small cell lung cancer, who have cancer confined to lungs and nearby lymph nodes. The surgeon may remove a small part of lung known as wedge or segment removal. One of the lobes of the lung may also be removed if needed. It is known as lobectomy. Some patients may need removal of entire lung known as pneumonectomy.
Chemotherapy: In some cases of non-small cell lung cancer chemotherapy is used to kill cancer cells and stop their further growth. It can be used alone or along with radiation therapy. It is usually used in the cases where the cancer has spread outside the lung and to other parts of the body. It is used before surgery or radiation to make the treatment process more effective. This process is known as neoadjuvant therapy. If it is given after other treatments to kill remaining cancer cells, it is known as adjuvant therapy.
Radiation Therapy: Radiation is used alongside chemotherapy in cases, where surgery is not possible. It helps in relieving symptoms caused by the cancer, such as breathing problems and swelling. It also helps in relieving pain caused due to spread of cancer to the bones. It is used for killing cancer cells and restricting their growth.
To relieve symptoms caused by Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer some other therapies are also used. They are listed below.
Laser Therapy–A small beam of laser light is used to burn and kill cancer cells.
Photodynamic Therapy–It activates activate a drug to kill cancer cells, in the body, by using light.
Patients can also avail experimental treatment therapies by parti[censored] ting in a clinical trial. Clinical trials are done to improve treatment of the disease.
The non-small cell lung cancer can pose some complications such as spread of disease beyond the lung to other parts of body, side effects of surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. All these should be taken care of while treating this disease.
Prevention of Non-Small Cell Lung cancer
There are few preventive measures by adopting which a person can prevent development of Non-Small Cell Lung cancer as much as possible. They are as follows-
Quitting smoking significantly reduces the risk of developing non-small cell lung cancer, though patients with long history of smoking cannot do away with the risk fully.
Avoiding exposure to second hand smoke or inhaling the smoke from other people's cigarettes, cigars, or pipes also reduces the risk of this disease.
Though regular check-ups help in preventing this disease, routine lung cancer screening using chest x-ray or CT scan is not recommended for people without symptoms of this disease.
